Roles

Boz (any gender/age): The narrator of the story. Boz weaves in and out of the play to offer context and interact with other characters. Think the Stage Manager in Our Town.

Ebenezer Scrooge (male, 45+): A miser whose love of money trumps everything else, including past and present

relationships. The only character in the play with significant growth, this role requires an actor who can convincingly demonstrate a wide range of emotions.

Bob Cratchit (male 25-45): A kindly, somewhat timid man who cares deeply for his family and works hard to support them, despite being mistreated by his employer, Scrooge.

Fred (male, 25-35): Scrooge's nephew, the daughter of his sister Fan. After her death, Scrooge became absent from Fred's life, turning down his nephew's repeated invitations to his home.

Jacob Marley (male, 35+): The ghost of Scrooge's former business partner, Jacob Marley. Like Scrooge, he was a hard, money-loving person in life, and comes to warn him about the consequences of his life decisions.

Ghost of Christmas Past (any gender/age): The first of the three spirits shows Scrooge scenes from his life, from early childhood to adulthood. Sometimes snarky, this entity offers Scrooge the opportunity to reflect on his past, much to his discomfort.

Young Scrooge (male, 10-15 and 20-30): Two actors will play younger versions of Scrooge, both as a child and then as a young adult during the Ghost of Christmas Past sequence.

Fan (female, 20-30): Scrooge's sister and mother of Fred.

Before her untimely death, she cared deeply for her brother and was a close friend of Scrooge's love interest, Belle.

Fezziwig (male, 35+): Scrooge's mentor and Belle's father. His generosity makes a significant impact on young Scrooge, but his poor business practices cause him to lose his company - a mistake Scrooge vows to never make himself.

Belle (female, 20-35): Scrooge's love interest and friend of Fan.

Though initially dedicated to Scrooge, she later breaks off their engagement and marries another man with whom she has a family.

Ghost of Christmas Present (any gender/age): Gregarious and full of life, the Ghost of Christmas Present is interested in justice and morality, and is quick to bring attention to Scrooge's sins. Though the character is usually represented by a tall, bearded man, we are looking for unconventional ways to cast the character, and want to see actors with big, joyful energy.

Mrs. Cratchit (female, 25-45): The loving matriarch of the Cratchit family. She is warm, yet tough and completely fed up with Scrooge's mistreatment of her husband and the detrimental effect his greediness is having on their family.

Tiny Tim (male/female, 8-12): The youngest Cratchit child.

Suffering from an unnamed illness, he serves as the central symbol of goodness and hope, as well as a tangible consequence of Scrooge's greediness. Without Scrooge's intervention, his death is inevitable. This is a singing role.

Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (any gender/age): Death incarnate. Rather than speaking, this character points Scrooge to scenes of a possible future where sadness, selfishness, and suffering abound. This is a non-speaking role.

Other speaking roles: Belle's husband, Scrooge's niece, Old Joe, Mrs. Dilber, charwoman, Scrooge's colleagues, and more.
Cratchit family: Belinda, Martha, Peter, 1-2 younger Cratchits.
Assorted children, ensemble members
A group of carolers will sing 3-5 songs

Rehearsal Info:

Rehearsals will begin on Monday, September 21 and will be held Monday through Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
